Introduction & The Lifelong Struggle<\/h5>

“For most of my life, I believed my body\u2019s shape was my own fault. The signs of lipoedema first manifested when I was around 14 years old, drawing painful comments at school. Over the decades, the condition progressed to my abdomen after the birth of my son, and later to my arms during perimenopause. <\/p>

For years, medical professionals told me I was simply obese and needed to lose weight. I tried every diet imaginable\u2014restricting carbohydrates, eliminating alcohol, and calorie counting. While I successfully lost weight elsewhere, the weight on my arms and legs never budged. Eventually, through intense dedication at the gym and strict nutrition, I managed to lose 7 stone. Yet, my arms and legs remained entirely unchanged. <\/p>

The emotional toll was heavy. I couldn’t buy non-stretchy trousers, coats wouldn’t fit over my arms, and boots were a distant memory. I felt sickened and embarrassed by my own reflection, especially in my underwear, trapped in a body I couldn’t change despite my best efforts. <\/p>

The Turning Point and Systemic Dismissal<\/h5>

I did not learn about lipoedema from a healthcare professional, but by pure chance through my Personal Trainer. She had encountered a woman who had undergone lipoedema reduction surgery, recognized the exact same physical characteristics in me, and asked her about it. <\/p>

Equipped with information from the Lipoedema Society, I went to my GP. While he quickly diagnosed me with Stage 3 lipoedema and referred me to a local lymphoedema clinic, there was no discussion about my mental health, my coping mechanisms, or recognition of the emotional weight of the diagnosis. <\/p>

My experience at the lymphoedema clinic was, unfortunately, horrific. The practitioner confirmed the lipoedema but wouldn\u2019t order the compression garments I was entitled to, stating I was “too much of a weird shape” for them. Furthermore, she advised me to stop taking Mounjaro (which I was using for inflamation), callously claiming it would make me look “even more out of proportion” than I already was. Upset by this encounter, I never returned. <\/p>

Pain, Progression, and the Search for a Cure<\/h5>

By the time I turned 51, the condition had become agonizing. I wasn’t just dealing with the joint pain of carrying extra weight; I was experiencing the distinct, unbearable neural and tissue pain of advanced lipoedema. I could no longer walk around a supermarket without severe pain, stand for short periods, or navigate stairs normally. <\/p>

Realizing that my mobility was declining so rapidly that I would soon require mobility aids, I began researching surgical options. Because I required high-volume liposuction, I realised I needed a specialist surgeon. That was when I discovered Dr. G in Cyprus. <\/p>

Finding Dr. G: A Consultation of True Compassion<\/h5>

Even though the consultation was online, Dr. G\u2019s empathy was immediately clear. For the first time in my life, a medical professional truly listened to me. He cared about my pain, he cared about how this disease impacted my daily life, and he wanted to help me fix it. <\/p>

Because I knew I might lose my nerve if I gave myself too much time to overthink the tsurgeries I scheduled my three debulking surgeries back-to-back, leaving just three months between each: November, February, and May.<\/p>

Travelling abroad for my first-ever major surgeries was terrifying. I wondered if I was making a massive mistake. I won’t pretend the surgeries or the recoveries are easy\u2014they are major, intense procedures. However, the care I received at hospital and afterwards was second to none. The entire staff team was professional, profoundly caring, and made me feel seen and important. Post operative MLD from Christos and his team is a really important part of the process. Having him seeing me every day gave me peace of mind, and his advice about what you can and can\u2019t do post op is vital for recovery. When you go home, Dr G is just a WhatsApp message away, so you are always supported throughout the process. <\/p>

Life After Surgery: Vindicated and Pain-Free<\/h5>

I am currently just five weeks post-op from my third surgery, with two further surgeries planned in 2027 and 2028, and the results up to now are nothing short of life-changing.<\/p>

This journey for me was never about cosmetic perfection; it was about quality of life so I can enjoy holidays with my husband, and play with my grandchildren. For decades, the medical community made me feel a deep sense of shame. Receiving the diagnosis finally vindicated me, proving that this was a disease and not a personal failure. But Dr. G’s surgeries gave me my life back. <\/p>

Today, the heavy, exhausted feeling in my limbs is gone. I can stand, I can walk up and down stairs more easily, and most importantly, I am no longer in pain.
